Why is the quality of our drinking water so important?

Our bodies are made up of 70% or more water. Water composes 75% percent of all muscle tissue, 80% of our blood and 90% of our brain. Nearly all of the biochemical reactions that occur in our cells depend on water and normal metabolic activity can only occur when cells are at least 65% water.
Water is the basis for all your body fluids including blood, lymph, and digestive fluids. It is critical for the transportation and absorption of nutrients as well as for the elimination of waste. Water also regulates body temperature, it lubricates joints, it cushions organs, and it moistens tissues. These are the most obvious functions of water. But water is critical at many other levels. It is involved in the transmission of signals throughout your body. When the amount or the quality of the water you drink is compromised, signals can become distorted or short circuited.
Water is the largest single source of energy in the human body. Our DNA depends on water. Water is also critical for the functioning of your immune system.
From energy production to joint lubrication to reproduction, there is no system in the body that does not depend on water.
Cells function best with a certain amount of water. When cellular water is limited, each cell is required to function at a less than the optimal level which can make us feel less than our best.
Water makes up the majority of our whole body and is second only to air when it comes to our survival so you better believe the quality of water you are drinking is going to have a huge impact on your health!

What is Kangen Water?

Kangen Water is filtered and ionized water produced by Enagic®'s machines through the process of electrolysis. The water passes through a filter to remove chlorine and other contaminants it then passes over charged plates. The electrostatic charge on the machine's plates causes the positively charged minerals in tap water, such as calcium and magnesium, to be separated from the negatively charged minerals, such as carbonate and phosphorus, that they are mixed within the water. This process separates the water into acidic and alkaline components. Both types of water are beneficial when used in specific ways.

What makes Kangen water different?

Ionization transforms the tap water in ways that go beyond the separation of ions. There are three main changes that occur to water during the ionization process. The pH of the water changes, it becomes hydrogen rich and its molecular structure is changed. These changes can be responsible for many health benefits.

pH – pH is a measure of a liquid’s acidity or alkalinity. The pH scale ranges from 0 on the acidic side to 14 on the alkaline side. A solution is neutral if the pH is 7.

The pH of your blood is extremely important. The normal pH range for blood is between 7.30 and 7.45. Blood that is more alkaline carries more oxygen for your cells (blood at a pH of 7.45 contains 65% more excess oxygen than blood at a pH of 7.3) and is thinner and easier for your body to pump helping to maintain a healthy blood pressure.

The production of acid in the body is a normal part of metabolism and our bodies can usually regulate the pH. However, in today’s world most people’s bodies are finding it hard to maintain that ideal pH and our blood is ending up being more acidic than it should be. This is the result of poor diet (heavy in sugar, soft drinks, excessive protein, and refined carbohydrates), dehydration, stress, and environmental pollutants. 

This electrolytically-reduced, hydrogen-rich water works to restore your body to a more alkaline state, which is optimal for good health.

It is possible to purchase bottled Alkaline water from the store, however these plastic bottles of water are not only bad for the environment and expensive. The Alkaline water from the store has additives in order for the water to maintain its alkalinity for is entire shelf life. For example, the ingredients for Essentia Water are: Purified water (by reverse osmosis), sodium bicarbonate, dipotassium phosphate, magnesium sulfate and calcium chloride and electrolytes… which, if you look up these ingredients some of them are not very good for you at all!!

We have all heard the terms antioxidant and free radical/oxidant however few people actually know what they are or how they work. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can harm your cells by stealing their electrons. Antioxidants are molecules that neutralize free radicals by giving them a spare electron.

Free radicals are naturally produced in our bodies and are used by our immune system to fight off infections and sickness. Unfortunately, in our increasingly unhealthy world, the number of free radicals that make their way into our bodies is also increasing. Free radicals can be caused by unhealthy foods, soft drinks, alcohol, tobacco smoke, pesticides and air pollutants just to name a few.

When free radicals outnumber antioxidants, those free radicals start stealing electrons from our fats, proteins and DNA which can damage them.

Elevated rates of oxidants and insufficient antioxidants in the body cause oxidative stress. A constant supply of external sources of antioxidants should be part of one‘s daily diet, to reduce oxidative stress and related damage. This is why everyone should not only care about the quantity of the water we drink, but also about the quality. Both are essential for our wellbeing.

We can measure whether a solution is an oxidant (free radical) or an antioxidant by measuring its oxidative reduction potential (ORP). A positive ORP indicates instability and that the molecules are hungry for electrons (oxidant/free radical) and a negative reading indicates that the molecules have a surplus of electrons (antioxidant).

Hydrogen rich water is characterized by exhibiting a negative ORP. 

For humans a positive or high ORP is better for the outside of the body (cleaning and sanitizing). A low ORP value is preferred for oral consumption.


Just like pH, ORP values are an important measurement for determining the quality of water.

Just to give you an example of how Kangen water’s ORP measures up here are some ORP readings from some common drinks that we drink every day.

Remember how I said that negative ORP = antioxidant and positive ORP = free radical? Well most bottled water has an ORP between +150 and +300 mili- volts (mV). Tap water can have an ORP value as high as +500 (Most water is literally free radicals in a bottle!!!). Coffee sits at around +175, beer +310 and cola has an ORP of around +450!

On the other hand, freshly squeezed orange juice has an ORP between - 200 to -100 (antioxidant).  Kangen Water has an ORP of around -600 to -800! Therefore, at up to 4x the antioxidant ability of fresh orange juice or vitamin C, Kangen water it is a SUPER antioxidant!! Molecular Structure – The last of the three main changes that occur to water during ionization is in its molecular structure. This refers to the way the molecules are organized. The molecular structure has a powerful effect on water’s ability to hydrate your cells and to carry energy throughout your body.

Water molecules have a positive and a negative end and because of this water molecules can be easily manipulated by an electric field. Water that is in a bottle or comes from your tap is usually clustered together in large clusters of 12-15 water molecules. When water is placed in an electric field, is forms smaller clusters and the molecules organize themselves into a crystal-like, hexagonal geometry, which is most often seen in pure water as it exists naturally in mountain springs, glacier melt, and other untouched sources. This crystalline structure enhances the water’s ability to hydrate cells, to transport nutrients, to remove waste, to support metabolic processes and to improve cellular communication.
